Guiding Spirit of the Hawk

Original painting of a red-tailed hawk with wings spread. After a friend’s brother passed away, she asked if I could paint her a red-tailed hawk to make prints from for her grieving family. She sent me a video of a red-tailed hawk that had visited her during her loved one’s passing. This is the result of that thoughtful request. Understandably, the red-tailed hawk is a symbol of power, courage and strength, as well as one of strategy and as a guiding spirit for people. The hawk’s red tail represents positive energy and regeneration.

The framed oil painting is accentuated with my signature live-edge wooden frame. This dark frame was created using a Japanese technique, called Shou sugi ban, where the wood is torched in flame to acquire a darkened color, bringing out the natural grain of the wood and preserving it, without the need of a chemical stain. Artist-crafted frame is made from rescued slab wood, wood that is normally burned as sugaring wood or bonfires. Frame is finished in three coats of Vermont poly-whey varnish, a USDA certified biobased product. Framed oil painting dimensions are 18” x 18.” Hanging hardware is affixed to rear of painting. A Certificate of Authenticity is included with every original painting.

15% of my art sales are donated to wildlife and habitat conservation. See http://www.artistsforconservation.org/Katie-Roberts for specific organizations that I donate to.

The red-tailed hawk has rebounded by 177% in the last 40 years, thanks to the 1972 DDT ban in the United States.
